China Agri-Business and Agriculture Study Tour: March 2006

Forbidden cityThis informative tour will provide participants with the opportunity to visit, see, experience, and understand agriculture, trade, food safety, and environmental issues in China.

An overview of agriculture issues, and economics prepared by the Canadian consulate and agricultural experts in China will be an excellent forum to ask questions and learn how policies from government and non-government agencies affect agriculture.

Note: fuel surcharges may be added to tour prices if and when they are imposed by the airline industry.

18 March - 3 April 2006 Itinerary

Beijing StreetMarch 18 Sydney/Beijing
Depart Sydney flying Qantas via Hong Kong to Beijing.  You will be met on arrival and transferred to your hotel. Overnight Beijing

March 19 Beijing (B,L,D)
Full American breakfast at the hotel.  This morning tour the ‘hutongs’ by cycle rickshaw in the old quarter of Beijing where you will see Chinese life at its most traditional.  Lunch followed by an afternoon city tour visiting the Bell and Drum Towers, the Moslem Quarter and the beautifully preserved City Wall.

This evening, a Welcome Dinner will be hosted by CICOS Ministry of Agriculture. Overnight Beijing

March 20 Beijing (B,L,D)
Full American breakfast at the hotel. The morning is comprised of Embassy presentations and a meeting with officials from the Ministry of Agriculture in connection with economies and agronomy (issues regarding urban development on farmland, agriculture and animal production).  Lunch.  In the afternoon, we visit Tiananmen Square and Forbidden City.  A fabulous dinner of Peking Roast Duck will be followed by a Chinese Acrobatic Performance – an ancient Chinese art form.  Return to our hotel for overnight in Beijing.

GreatwallMarch 21 Beijing (B,L,D)

Full American breakfast at the hotel.  Travel by motor coach to tour a local vegetable production base (greenhouse), poultry farm and broiler factory.  We visit with a typical peasant at the foot of the Great Wall and have a traditional Chinese lunch together.  In the afternoon we will enjoy sightseeing at the Great Wall.  Dinner will be followed by a performance of the renowned Peking Opera.  Return to the hotel for overnight in Beijing.

March 22 Beijing/Qufu (B,L,D)
Full American buffet breakfast at the hotel and check out.  After visiting Beihai Park, we proceed to Shandong Province by coach where we will have lunch.  In the afternoon we visit a beef cattle farm.  Dinner will be in Ji’nan City, Capital of Shandong.  We then travel to Qufu, the home town of Confucius, and check in to Qufu Hotel.

March 23 Qufu (B,L,D)
Full American buffet breakfast at the hotel.  In the morning we tour a Shandong swine farm.  After lunch there is time to explore Qufu.  Dinner. Overnight Qufu Hotel

March 24 Qufu/Xi’An (B,L,D)
Full American buffet breakfast at the hotel, and check out.  Leave for Xi’An by flight.  We will have lunch before travelling to Hua-qing Hot Springs, and the Neolithic Banpo Village, which practiced the Yangshao culture around 6000 BC.  Check in at Xi’An Hotel.  Dinner.

TerracottaMarch 25 Xi’An(B,L,D)
Full American buffet breakfast at the hotel followed by a visit to the Terracotta pottery works and the amazing Terracotta Warriors.  Lunch.  In the afternoon we visit a hi-tech demo garden in Xi’An as well as a cooperative.  Dinner.  Overnight in Xi’an.

March 26 Xi’An/Chongqing (B,L,D)
Full American buffet breakfast at the hotel, and check out.  Leave for Chongqing by flight, check in at Chongqing hotel.  Lunch. An agricultural visit (to be determined) is planned this afternoon.  Dinner.  Overnight in Chongqing.

March 27 Yangtze River Cruise (B,L,D)Yangtze
Full American buffet breakfast at the hotel.  This morning we start our cruise on the Yangtze River.  Lunch, dinner and overnight on board.

March 28 Yangtze River Cruise (B,L,D)
The Yangtze River cruise continues.  All meals on board.

March 29 Yangtze River Cruise/Shanghai (B,L,D)
The Yangtze River cruise continues.  Breakfast and lunch on board. At Yichang the cruise concludes and we depart for Shanghai by flight.  Transfer to hotel and check in.  Evening – dinner Shanghai

March 30 Shanghai (B,L,D)
Full American buffet breakfast at the hotel.  Visit a Shanghai dairy farm in the morning, followed by lunch in downtown Shanghai.  Stroll the beautiful Yuyuan Garden, a place of peace and comfort in the heart of bustling Shanghai and enjoy the bazaar.  Afterwards, we visit the Shanghai Museum, the most remarkable cultural institution in the city.  We take time for the “Pedestrians Only” Nanjing Road and shopping.  Enjoy a bird’s-eye view of Shanghai City from the top of the Oriental Pearl TV Tower before returning to the hotel for dinner.

ShanghaiMarch 31 Shanghai/Hangzhou (B,L,D)
Full American buffet breakfast at the hotel, and check out.  Depart for Sun-qiao Agricultural Development Zone.  Lunch.  Leave for Hangzhou by motor coach.  Check in at Hangzhou hotel.  In the afternoon, visit West Lake.  Evening dinner.

April 1 Hangzhou/Shanghai (B,L,D)
Buffet Breakfast at the hotel.  Visit to Hangzhou Tea Plantation.  Lunch. Visit to Lingyin Temple.  Leave for Shanghai by motor coach.  Check in at Shanghai hotel.  Dinner.

April 2 Shanghai/Sydney (B)
Full American buffet breakfast at the hotel, morning at leisure, time for some last minute shopping.  Afternoon check out from your hotel before transfer to Shanghai International Airport for your Qantas flight to Sydney.

April 3 Sydney
Your flight arrives in Sydney this morning.   Tour ends.
